The second PROBE Symposium series will explore
the immediate issues and potential of urban planning and urban development today.
Today's cities are caught up in a titanic struggle to compete on a global scale.
Increasing complexity and the speed of change have exceeded the grasp of conventional
thought and technique. As societies undergo structural transformations, European
city planning, heretofore restricting to planning in the sense of design, has
embraced a broader concept, "practical experimentation," which recognizes
the importance of the "management" required to link a vast variety of
elements, adjust their relationships, and find a proper balance among them.
The symposium brings together Japanese and European developers, local governments,
designers and other experts in a wide variety of fields to examine the latest
case studies from Europe and offer their own opinions, including articles of faith
and objects of dissention, based on their own city-making experiences.
