MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, invited ten architects to take part in competition to determine the design for its expansion and renovation project for the 21st century. Since its establishment, MoMA has been on a mission "to express what modern art is in visible form" and has embodied the historical interpretation of the word "modern". In this sense, the invited architects were asked to play an epoch-making role because they had to pursue and define "modern" for the 21st century so that MoMA's understanding of history would be passed on appropriately to the 21st century.
This exhibition presented the proposals of the three finalists including the winner of the competition, Yoshio Taniguchi, and featured models, drawings and sketches from their submissions. "What will modern mean in the 21st century?" "How should the state of contemporary art be then?" The exhibition presented the answers of the three architects to these questions.

* This exhibition was organized by The Museum of Modern Art, New York, with a generous grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, and with additional support from the Contemporary Arts Council of The Museum of Modern Art. It is traveling internationally under the auspices of the International Council of The Museum of Modern Art.
