Since the late 19th century to
the present, Helsinki has been actively integrating with the natural environment
and is now regarded as a particularly well-balanced city in Europe. The unique
methodology of the city's urban planning, emphasizing an ecological life style
and harmony with the environment, dates back to the Garden City project by Eero
Saarinen and has been consistently followed from generation to generation.
This exhibition will explore the philosophical backgrounds of the city's unique
urban planning and original methods through major projects from the early 20th
century to the present, and thus present a new perspective for a truly significant
approach toward urban planning for the 21st century.
Beginning from June, 1997 to March 1998, more than twenty events including exhibitions,
symposiums and workshops will be held in more than ten cities throughout Japan
under the title of "Finland-Japan Seminar on Environmental Planning and Quality
of Life 1997 : Vision for the Next Generation. " "Helsinki / City in the Forest"
was planned as part one of this series of events.
