| Unit Master: Michael Weinstock Organizer and Tutors in Japan: Nobuyuki Nomura and Noriyuki Tajima / tele-urbanism AA School Diploma Unit 9 focuses on the open design strategy required for today's highly dense and fluid urban environments. During the Tokyo Collaborative Workshop, participants from Japan joined AA school students to examine "flow" and "motion" in and around Shibuya Station. Forms of expression involving a variety of techniques were examined. |

| Organizer: TN Probe In Cooperation With: Moriko Kira (Architect) Participants: Claus en Kaan (Architects), Michel Vab Gessel (Landscape designer), Raynoud Homan(Graphic designer), Arno van der Mark(Artist), Robert Meyer(Architect), Han Michel (Housing Corporation, director), Joep Padberg (Developer), Nan Raap (Architect), Nick Verdonk (Urban designer), plus Japanese involved in urban planning and architecture; total 30 individuals. A cocktail party was held to take advantage of the visit to Japan of ten Dutch architects, urbanists, designers, commissioners, and artists, who are leading figures in urban planning in the Netherlands. Slides of participants' works stimulated conversation on topics including the cultural and social peculiarities of Japan and the Netherlands. |

Executive Committee Presenters: Peripheriques, Atlier bow Wow, Takeshi Goto, and Riichi Miyake Students and presenters spend two days examining the theme of "Tokyo Customization". Student research was discussed with the speakers and summarized in guidebook with photographs and drawings. | Workshop: The University of New South Wales | |

| Organizer: The University of New South
Wales (Tutor in charge: Julian Worrall) Twenty students from the University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia) were involved in this workshop on contemporary Tokyo, a city in which urban functions are highly concentrated. Many of the students were from Singapore or Hong Kong and brought home city experience to the study of urban culture in Tokyo. The workshop examined both cities and architecture from a wide variety of viewpoints including history and development, unique regional features and homogenization brought on by globalization. Issues raised included such oppositions as genuine versus counterfeit, nature versus urbanization, and absence and presence of individuality. |

of Architecture (Tutor in charge: Neil Denari, Nancy Finley) Presenters:Manabu Chiba, Jun Nakamichi, RE[ ] / Responsive Environment, and Nancy Finley Taking advantage of the visit to Japan of ten students from Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), a seminar was held to examine "discovery in architecture." Japanese architects, an architecture photographer, and a group of architects who specialize in visual design presented their individual perspectives. Discussion focused on architecture as an occupation and collaboration as a tool for creating new communities. |
